ABOUT ZINJ DESIGN Dog collars in Kenya, handbags, safari belts, handmade-kenya

Zinj – a name used by Herodotus to describe the ancient Swahili coast, from southern Somalia to northern Mozambique. An inspiration for an unusual little workshop, in a tiny village overlooking the beautiful Takaungu creek and the Indian Ocean. dog collars in Kenya, handbags, safari belts, handmade-kenya

Dedicated to promoting East African bead and leather-work across the globe and improving the lives of East African craftspeople at home.

Zinj Design has now trained and supports over 80 artisans from Takaungu and the surrounding area.  Before joining the team at Zinj, many of the villagers were either unemployed or working only very sporadically.

The steady income they are now earning means they can settle down with their families and send their children to school. Hence our motto:  ‘Changing Lives One Bead at a Time’.

Zinj Design uses rustic and natural, free range, Kenyan beef leather to make beautiful handbags, sandals, belts and other small accessories. At Zinj Design we also embellish them with East African beadwork in both traditional and contemporary patterns and colours. Every piece is hand-stitched, and handbags are lined with traditional Kenyan cotton kikois. All the brass hardware for belt or dog collar buckles, as well as handbag clips, is hand-cast from recycled, pure brass.

We welcome visitors at the Zinj Workshop in Takaungu and offer a wide variety of our goods at ‘factory outlet’ prices.
